The Annual Recovery Art Show - Tallgrass Recovery holds an annual art show at the Post Pilgrim Gallery. Tallgrass Recovery is a community-based partnership designed to bring together diverse groups of individuals from all demographics to establish a dialogue on the struggles of addiction and the beauty of a life of recovery. Art is a powerful tool to initiate discussion of difficult issues like addiction. At Tallgrass Recovery, our vision is to help individuals and families suffering from alcohol and drug addiction get their lives back; a life they never imagined possible. By combining art and our vision at Tallgrass Recovery we have created a community-based discourse displaying the effects of addiction and how individuals survive the disease. This is a free event, open to the public. Each year this event strives to reduce stigma, educate the public, and provide an outlet for community members to express their experiences with addiction.
A .jpg or PNG of art and artist statement (telling your story) can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Each artist can create one piece in each category; "How addiction has affected my life and/or how recovery has affected my life"
The butterfly is often used as a symbol of transformation, metamorphosis, renewal, and rebirth for those of us who are friends and family of alcoholics.
A few weeks ago, this butterfly flew into my flower garden and landed on a perfect Echinacea. Upon closer examination, the wings had some voids where this swallowtail should have graceful, birdlike wings. In spite of its defects, the butterfly gently sipped nectar before awkwardly taking flight and continuing on its way. I realized that it is how I feel about my years in recovery.
The effects of living with alcoholism left me less than perfect. By the grace of God, in recovery I am elevated beyond the problems of the past to live in the present and look forward to the future.
You're beautifully broken
And You can be whole again
Even a million scars
Doesn't change Whose you are
