Mentor Programs

Guided by Someone Who Has Walked the Same Path

One of the most powerful parts of the Tallgrass experience is the Mentor Program. Every guest is paired with a volunteer mentor who is actively living in recovery, working the steps, connected to a sponsor, and engaged in their home group. These mentors know the fear, confusion, and hopelessness that often come with addiction. They also know the freedom, peace, and joy that come with spiritual recovery.

Mentors at Tallgrass do more than instruct. They walk beside each guest, sharing their own experience with honesty and compassion. They guide guests through the 12 steps one on one, offering direction, encouragement, and accountability at every stage. This relationship often becomes one of the most meaningful connections in a guest’s life.

The Mentor Program is the reason many people describe Tallgrass as the first place they felt truly understood.

Why Mentorship Matters

Lived Experience Creates Trust

Guests can be honest with mentors because mentors have been there. There is no judgment, only understanding.

Accountability That Feels Supportive

Mentors help guests stay committed to their spiritual work without pressure or criticism. They support progress with clarity and compassion.

Clear Guidance Through the Steps

Mentors take guests through the 12 steps individually, helping them understand the spiritual principles and apply them to their lives in practical ways.

Connection Through Honesty

Guests often feel comfortable sharing fears, mistakes, and breakthroughs with mentors because the relationship is grounded in shared experience.

Hope Through Example

Seeing a mentor live a sober, meaningful life gives guests confidence that recovery is possible for them too.

What Mentors Do for Guests

Guide Step Work

Mentors meet with guests regularly, answer questions, and help them move through the steps with clarity and integrity.

Offer Emotional and Spiritual Support

Whether a guest feels overwhelmed, discouraged, or hopeful, mentors offer a steady presence and perspective.

Model Recovery

Mentors demonstrate what it looks like to practice honesty, humility, willingness, and service in daily life.

Connect Guests to Community

Mentors introduce guests to meetings, fellowship, and the broader recovery community that will support them after leaving Tallgrass.

Provide Ongoing Encouragement

Guests often say their mentor gave them the strength to keep going when they wanted to give up.

Who Becomes a Mentor

Many Tallgrass mentors are alumni who experienced the program firsthand and want to carry the message forward. Others are long time members of the recovery community who believe in helping newcomers. All mentors are actively working the steps and living a spiritually centered life.

Their commitment to service strengthens both their own recovery and the lives of those they mentor.

The Power of This Relationship

For many guests, their mentor becomes the first person they trust in early recovery. This connection creates safety, direction, and hope. Guests realize that someone believes in them and is willing to walk with them through the hardest parts of the journey.

Families often share that meeting their loved one’s mentor is the moment they began to feel hopeful again.

A Relationship That Can Last a Lifetime

Many mentor relationships continue long after guests leave the immersion program. They attend meetings together, stay in touch, celebrate milestones, and support each other through life’s ups and downs.

Mentorship is not just part of the program. It becomes part of a guest’s recovery story.

Proven Results Backed by Research

Clinical research from Harvard Medical School shows that Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) significantly improves long-term recovery outcomes. Compared to other leading therapies, individuals in TSF programs experienced 60–71% higher rates of sustained remission in the first year. Even more compelling, at a 3-year follow-up, abstinence rates were 50% higher among those engaged in Twelve Step–based care.

These results are driven by one key factor: active participation in recovery communities like AA, which has been shown to create lasting behavioral change, stronger support systems, and improved accountability.

At Tallgrass Recovery, our Twelve Step Program approach is designed to connect you with these proven pathways to long-term sobriety—so recovery is not just possible, but sustainable.
