Recovery is not meant to be a solitary journey. Many people struggling with addiction try to fix their lives alone, only to end up feeling more isolated, overwhelmed, and discouraged. Addiction thrives in loneliness. Healing thrives in connection.
At Tallgrass, community is not an optional part of the program. It is the heart of everything we do. Nearly four hundred volunteers, countless alumni, and a supportive staff come together to create a recovery environment unlike anything else. Guests are surrounded by people who live spiritual principles daily, who care deeply, and who want nothing more than to help someone else experience freedom.
In this community, recovery becomes possible because no one is left to face their fear, shame, or uncertainty alone. Guests discover that connection is the antidote to isolation, service is the antidote to self centeredness, and accountability is the antidote to chaos.
Tallgrass is more than a program. It is a family.
Sponsorship is one of the most transformative elements of the recovery experience. At Tallgrass, sponsorship begins early and is enriched by the unique tradition of having mentors from the recovery community walk guests through the 12 steps.
A sponsor or mentor offers:
This relationship becomes a lifeline and a source of hope. Many guests describe their sponsor or mentor as the first person they felt truly saw them and understood their pain.
Guidance Through the 12 Steps
Sponsors walk guests through the steps one on one, helping them understand each part and apply it spiritually.
Emotional Support
Sponsors help guests navigate fear, sadness, guilt, confusion, or emotional overwhelm with compassion.
Prayer and Meditation
Some sponsors introduce simple spiritual practices that help build inner peace.
Accountability
They provide a structure of honesty and follow through, helping guests stay aligned with their spiritual principles.
Ongoing Relationship
Sponsorship often lasts far beyond the thirty day program. Many sponsors become lifelong friends and spiritual guides.
Hundreds of Volunteers
Tallgrass thrives because of the incredible men and women who give their time to help guide, feed, support, and mentor guests.
Alumni Who Stay Connected
Alumni return for meetings, meals, events, and service. They bring strength, love, and inspiration.
Staff Who Live Recovery Daily
Every staff member understands recovery personally and leads with compassion and honesty.
Peers Walking the Same Path
Guests form deep connections with one another, sharing hope, fear, laughter, and progress.
Families often ask why community involvement is emphasized so strongly. The answer is simple. Addiction isolates people mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Community reverses this isolation and creates the foundation for long term sobriety.
Families regularly tell us that Tallgrass gave their loved one the sense of belonging and support they had been missing for years.
We heal through connection, not isolation

For two decades, Tallgrass has turned what begins as a desperate search for a way out into something extraordinary: a new freedom, a new happiness, and a life worth living.
Help us celebrate the people, partnerships, and stories that made 20 years of recovery possible.

Clinical research from Harvard Medical School shows that Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) significantly improves long-term recovery outcomes. Compared to other leading therapies, individuals in TSF programs experienced 60–71% higher rates of sustained remission in the first year. Even more compelling, at a 3-year follow-up, abstinence rates were 50% higher among those engaged in Twelve Step–based care.
These results are driven by one key factor: active participation in recovery communities like AA, which has been shown to create lasting behavioral change, stronger support systems, and improved accountability.
At Tallgrass Recovery, our Twelve Step Program approach is designed to connect you with these proven pathways to long-term sobriety—so recovery is not just possible, but sustainable.
