Tallgrass would not exist without its volunteers. They are the heart of our recovery community and the reason our program remains so powerful, compassionate, and effective. With nearly four hundred volunteers supporting Tallgrass each year, guests are surrounded by people who deeply understand recovery and want nothing more than to give back what was freely given to them.
Our volunteers bring warmth, humility, strength, and lived experience to every corner of Tallgrass. They lead meetings, guide step work, serve food, listen without judgment, support guests emotionally, and offer hope through their presence. Many volunteers are alumni who once walked through our doors seeking help themselves and who now return to show others what recovery looks like.
At Tallgrass, volunteering is not a task. It is a spiritual practice, an offering of gratitude, and a cornerstone of long term sobriety.
A Program Powered by Community
Tallgrass is a community driven recovery program, not a clinical institution. Volunteers bring authenticity, warmth, and spiritual depth to the guest experience.
Lived Experience Creates Connection
Most volunteers are in long term recovery. They understand addiction deeply and personally, which allows guests to feel safe and understood.
Service Strengthens Spiritual Growth
Helping others is a core principle of the 12 steps. Volunteers serve because it keeps them grounded, grateful, and connected to their Higher Power.
Long Term Relationships Form Naturally
Many volunteers become mentors, spiritual guides, or lifelong friends to guests who need support long after the program ends.
They Bring Hope by Simply Showing Up
Volunteers represent what recovery looks like when it continues to grow. Guests see living proof that healing is real.
There are many ways volunteers contribute to the Tallgrass mission, including:

For two decades, Tallgrass has turned what begins as a desperate search for a way out into something extraordinary: a new freedom, a new happiness, and a life worth living.

Clinical research from Harvard Medical School shows that Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) significantly improves long-term recovery outcomes. Compared to other leading therapies, individuals in TSF programs experienced 60–71% higher rates of sustained remission in the first year. Even more compelling, at a 3-year follow-up, abstinence rates were 50% higher among those engaged in Twelve Step–based care.
These results are driven by one key factor: active participation in recovery communities like AA, which has been shown to create lasting behavioral change, stronger support systems, and improved accountability.
At Tallgrass Recovery, our Twelve Step Program approach is designed to connect you with these proven pathways to long-term sobriety—so recovery is not just possible, but sustainable.
